There are plenty of articles out there discussing the benefits of one pet food over another. Whether you feed grain free, holistic, high protein, low phosphorus or anything in between there are some universal tips that you should keep in mind when picking your pet’s food.
A pet food label that boasts that a food is “premium” don’t always take in to account the nutrients that are contained within their premium ingredients, they don’t always divulge the amount of an ingredient that is included in their food recipe and they don’t always share the quality of the ingredients being used either!
Myth #2: The best food for your pet is one that lists real meat as the first ingredient
There is a frequently quoted myth going around that claims that the best pet food for your pet is one that lists real meat as the first ingredient. This is not always true! Some pet food manufacturers are able to list these real meats as their first ingredients because in terms of weight, there is more meat in their product than any other ingredient. What this doesn’t take in to account however, is that the majority of the weight in this real meat is water weight! When your pet’s food is made this water weight is reduced which technically should move meat down the list of ingredients!
Myth #3: The order of the ingredients is the most important factor in selecting your pet’s diet
The order of ingredients in your pet’s food can be deceiving. Some pet food manufacturers actually actively deceive you as to the quantity of a certain ingredient by “splitting” those ingredients. An example of this is a company splitting ground wheat and wheat flour in to two separate ingredients allowing them to feature further down the ingredients list instead of up near the top!
