Here at Leesville Animal Hospital we never recommend skipping your pet’s monthly flea and tick prevention – yes, even in the winter time! But today we want to talk a little bit about a natural flea remedy as well – coconut oil.
There may come a time when, even as a responsible pet owner, you find yourself in need of a way to get rid of fleas from your pet and for some dogs a natural way to get rid of fleas is the best way. Whether your dog contracted fleas as a result of accidentally missing a dose of flea and tick repellant, whether they are a new dog or a rescue dog or whether they are a dog unable to tolerate traditional flea and tick repellants coconut oil might be the answer you are looking for. Examples of dogs that will benefit from a natural flea remedy include dogs with a compromised immune systems, extreme allergies, elderly or infirm dogs, extremely underweight dogs, very young dogs etc.
So why coconut oil? Coconut oil is an all natural product that contains lauric acid which acts as a repellent to fleas and ticks, but not only that, it is also great for your cat or dog’s skin and coat! It is also good to note that coconut oil is non-toxic so if your pet licks it, it is perfectly safe!
If your pet already has fleas in their coat, cover your hands in coconut oil and rub them together until it gets a liquid like consistency. Now massage it on to your pets coat, making sure to work it all the way down to the skin. Once you have covered your pet’s coat (you can do one section at a time if you like) you want to take a flea comb and run it through the fur and you will find that the fleas stick to the comb because of the oil. Any fleas that are not stuck in your pets fur because of the oil will jump off your pet because of the repellent nature of the coconut oil so it is best not to do this inside your house!
If you are using coconut oil as a repellent on a pet that cannot tolerate traditional flea and tick medications you can utilize the massaging method noted above approximately once a week. You can also mix a little coconut oil with water and put this solution in a spray bottle to mix thoroughly and use daily, making sure to rub down your pet thoroughly afterwards!
