What Exactly is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the use of water to aid in soothing the symptoms and improving specific health conditions.
How is Hydrotherapy Done?
There are multiple ways of performing hydrotherapy – in an uncontrolled environment such as a home pool or lake, in a therapeutic pool, or in a hydrotherapy tank.
Here at Leesville Animal Hospital we have a hydrotherapy tank!
What is a Hydrotherapy Tank?
A hydrotherapy tank is a large glass sided tank with a treadmill at the bottom. One side of the tank lowers down to form a ramp for access. A dog then walks up the ramp and the ramp is then lifted and sealed to create a four-sided tank once again.
While the dog stands in the tank, warm treated water (think hot tub!) then fills the tank to an appropriate level. This level is determined by the size of your dog and the area of their injury.
Once the tank is filled to the desirable level, the dog is then directed to face the correct direction and the treadmill begins to move.
The treadmill at the bottom of the tank moves slowly and increases in speed until it reaches a comfortable but therapeutic speed.
Why Use a Hydrotherapy Tank?
A hydrotherapy tank like the one at our vet Raleigh NC, offers the benefits of soothing sore arthritic joints, offering low impact exercise, building strength pre and post-operatively, loosening still aging joints, and increasing range of motion.
In addition, a hydrotherapy tank allows for complete control of a therapeutic program. Unlike larger pools or lakes, a hydrotherapy tank like ours allows our vets to control the speed of movement, control the height of the water level, contain the dog in one area, and adjust the resistance of therapy progressively.
Is Hydrotherapy Safe?
Hydrotherapy is one of the safest forms of exercise for any dog, but particularly for aging pups or dogs with significant injuries or disabilities.
Dogs are always monitored while in our hydrotherapy tank, vets closely note progress as dogs undergo their hydrotherapy programs, therapy is strictly controlled and can be adjusted to your dog’s daily ability, and hydrotherapy is always accompanied by icing exercised joints and range of motion exercises to improve overall health!
