Can I Give People Medication To My Cat Or Dog?

One question that pet owners often ask us here at the Leesville Animal Hospital blog is “can I give people medication to my cat or dog?”  Today we want to talk about just that!

Can I Give People Medication to My Cat or Dog?

When it comes to giving pets any type of human medications there are many different factors and risks involved that should be taken into consideration. You should NEVER give your pet any human medications before consulting your veterinarian directly for each pet in question. There are a number of human medications that can be utilized for pet care such as Benedryl or Pepto-Bismol; however, these medications should ALWAYS be used as directed by your pet’s veterinarian because the amount of medication you use for your pet will vary depending upon your pets current health, age, weight and other medications. It is also important that your veterinarian knows about all human medications that your pet is taking because they can influence veterinary tests that are performed under regular or emergency circumstances.

If you are ever considering human medications for your pet ALWAYS call your pet’s veterinarian first to ensure that first the medication is safe for your pet and to ask for correct dosage information! NEVER EVER administer human medications to your pet on your own advice or upon the advice of friends or family or even veterinarians who do not have first-hand experience with your pet’s current medical records.
