What You Need to Know About Your Pet's Surgery
Before your pet's surgery you will meet with one of our veterinarians and receive instructions that are specific to your pet's surgical experience. It is important that you understand these instructions and follow them as directed. For example, ALL of our surgical patients are required to have food withheld from midnight of the day of their surgery. These rules are designed to protect your pet during their surgical procedure.
Additionally, we do require that all pets undergoing scheduled surgical procedures be fully up to date on their vaccinations. This is not only something to abide by for surgical situations however, it is something that you should do at all times in order to maintain your pet's overall health and wellness.
Finally, for some pet's we require pre-surgical blood work to be performed. This blood work is done to assess your pet's overall health and to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo surgery at that time.
Pain management is an important factor in your pet's surgical recovery. Pain can not only make your pet feel absolutely awful following their surgical procedure, but it can also slow the healing process. We firmly believe in a protocol of aggressive pain management for all of our surgical patients. This protocol includes: pre-operative pain control, local anesthesia as needed, and post-operative pain control. Fentanyl patches are applied one day prior to most orthopedic and extensive soft tissue surgical cases, as dictated by a specialist.
